About Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are bloodsucking insects that feed on warm-blooded hosts. 5mm long with a flattened oval shaped body which is red-brown in colour (darker colour when fed).
Usually nocturnal, bedbugs often lodge in dark crevices, behind picture frames, skirting boards and furniture; coming out to feed and then return to their hiding places close to the host for future feeds.
Signs of bed bug infestations include smears or spots of excrement on mattresses and bed linen as well as blood spots from the host when bitten. Visible signs of live adults, nymphs and egg clusters around headboard, bed frame and furniture. Itchy bites to the host causing red swelling and irritation.
An important piece of information to know about the feeding habits of Bed Bugs is that they can survive for up to 12 months without feeding even though they seek blood every five to ten days.
Treatment
The treatment of bed bugs requires the bed to be stripped, along with all bedside and wardrobes emptied and the room cleared to allow for an application of residual insecticide to be sprayed to all areas. The spray treatment should be repeated after 2 weeks to kill off the remaining eggs.
