About Carpet Beetle

The Carpet Beetle is a small mottled brown, grey and cream coloured insect around 2-4mm long.

The adult carpet beetle feeds on nectar and pollen, it is the larvae that cause damage to wool, carpets, fur, any nature fibres. The larvae (called ‘woolly bears’) are 4mm long and covered in brown hairs.

The larvae are often found in wardrobes and airing cupboards feeding on blankets and clothes. They migrate down from loft spaces sometimes from an old birds nest.

To deter furture problems, check lofts and eaves for birds nest and remove. Vacuum thoroughly throughout airing cupboards and shelving and clean under carpets and underlay.

Treatment: The carpet beetle larvae (woolly bear) would need to be treated with an insecticide spray, taking care to thoroughly spray all cracks and crevices where dust and fluff may collect.
