Fleas

Fleas are small wingless insects, 2mm in length with a shiny red-brown (laterally flattened) body and large hind legs designed for jumping.

The complete lifecycle of a flea takes about a month in the summer. Fleas lay their eggs in pets bedding, carpeting and skirting boards. The eggs hatch into the larvae stage and feed on skin, feathers and faeces of the adult flea.

The larvae spin a silken cocoon and begin to form into the pupae stage inside the cocoon. The pupae continue to grow until a young flea emerges, but only when vibration is detected from a potential host. The flea can remain in the cocoon for several months.

Once the flea emerges and finds a host to hop onto, the adults mate and the lifecycle with begin all over again.

The adult flea feeds on warm blooded hosts, flea bites on humans typically cause intense irritation around a central bright red spot.

Evidence of Flea Infestation:

Initial indications of a flea infestation are cats and dogs continually scratching. Itchy red bites on humans, appearing typically below knee level.

Flea dirt evident on pet bedding and furniture, and live fleas seen crawling through pets fur or jumping from the host.

Treatment:

To treat a flea infestation we would apply a residual insecticide to all floor areas throughout the property. The initial treatment will kill the eggs, larvae and adult fleas. No insecticide can penetrate the pupae stage. The pupae will usually hatch out within 2 weeks and then be killed off by the residual insecticide.

We would recommend also treating infested pets with a special veterinary aerosol, powder, shampoo or medication and either discard badly infested bedding or thoroughly clean if possible.

We will re-treat any infestation that is still active 2 weeks after our initial spray treatment as spraying again before this period will not speed up the process of elimination.
