Rat Control
• Brown colour, blunt nose and small hair covered ears
• 23cms body length with thick and scaly tail
• Weighs between 150 – 300grams (can be up to 500grams)
Lifecycle:
The Brown Rat makes its nest underground near refuse tips, under sheds, patios and earth banks. Creatures of habit, rats leave regular “runs” to and from feeding areas.
Rats can also occupy loft spaces, under floorboards, wall cavities and basements. They gnaw through woodwork and cause damage to electric cabling. Their incisor teeth constantly grow and in order to prevent excessive growth rats will constantly gnaw objects. House fires have been known to be the result of rodent damage to electrical wiring.
Rats eat just about everything but seed grain would be their favourite. They feed mostly at night and an average size rat will eat 50g of food a day.
They pass up to 40 droppings a day which are concentrated in one area (12mm and tapered at both ends). Rats harbour several diseases, such as weils disease, salmonella and rat bite fever.
Rats breed rapidly; a female will have up to 6 litters per year producing 6 to 8 young per litter. The young reach maturity at 3 months old. A small problem could become an infestation if left untreated.
Treatment:
For external problems we use spill proof rodenticide baits in heavy duty metal lockable bait boxes. The bait boxes are installed near to rat runs and areas where rats are foraging for food.
For internal areas spill proof baits would be installed into lofts, basements, plants rooms, cupboards, sheds and anywhere else necessary or safe to do so.
Our treatment for rodents include a minimum of 3 visits or until the problem has been cleared. Rats are very cautious of new objects and it can take several days for the rats to become used to the bait boxes.
We recommend good management of waste food and rubbish in bin areas. Rodenticide baits in heavy duty bait boxes will prevent rats from becoming established in these areas.
